ACTIVITIES IN PEMBROKESHIRE -Birdwatching
Birdwatchers will find Pembrokeshire an interesting area at any time of year.
During the winter, one can enjoy wildfowl, waders and other water birds such as Slavonian Grebes and Little Egrets on the Nevern Estuary here in Newport as well as on the nearby Teifi and the Cleddau further south.
Spring sees the arrival of those birds that visit this country only to breed such as Swallows, warblers and many of the seabirds.
Summer is an ideal time to visit the seabird colonies and witness the spectacle of their hectic breeding cycle.
The Nevern Estuary and its waders, gulls, Herons and Kingfishers are best viewed from the iron bridge at the head of the estuary in Newport.
A visit to the various island Reserves is well worth it. Skomer Island (National Natural Reserve managed by Wildlife Trust west Wales) is reached by boat daily between April and October from Martins Haven. Ramsey Island (RSPB Reserve) is reached by boat from St David’s. For information and bookings ring Thousand Island Expeditions on 01437 721686.
There are numerous other good bird watching areas such as the Cleddau estuary, Strumble Head, Grassholm, Bosherston Pools etc.
